Maria & Carlita

I was mowing the lawn the other day... with one of those old fashioned lawn mowers. The ones without a motor, that you have to push and pull, and then pick the grass out of the blades every 10 minutes. But I didn't mind because it was a lovely day and I was breaking in my brand new Chacos! I was taking my 4th break after around 30 minutes of lawn mowing when I hear someone say, "Esa maquina no funciona", meaning "that machine doesn't work" in Spanish. I look over and there is this lovely elderly woman, casually watching me mow the lawn. She is accompanied by her granddaughter. I sat on the sidewalk and chatted with them about the weather, about the differences between California and Oregon, and about how they used to live in California. Maria, the grandmother, told me about the adventures of her youth. Carlita, the granddaughter, and I spoke about her siblings and school. It was such an honor talking with them! And it has been a while since I used my Spanish, so that was nice as well! Naturally I had to take their picture. So here are my favorite shots! :)
